Who do I Draft & When?
This is an interesting Draft Tool and its a Draft Tool you will only find here at Fantasy Baseball Express!
Every day during draft season (January thru March), people email me questions asking me, "Who do I pick with my first 3 picks?"  Now, as broad as that is, there is actually a method to making your first 3 - 4 rounds successful.  After all, these are the 3 or 4 most important rounds of the draft.  If you don't choose the right combo of stud players here, you can kiss that league championship goodbye.  So look at the following list.  Assuming you make the best  first round selection, you can use the following picks as ideas while you are drafting.  Of course, we all know that every draft is different, but this is simply a guide on how to balance your team between Power, Speed, and a Top Flight Starting Pitcher (Or another Hitter).  Here are some ideas based on real 2007 draft experience going by who was the #1 pick drafted....

Scenario #1
1. Albert Pujols
2. Ryan Howard
3. Jose Reyes
4. Alfonso Soriano
5. Alex Rodriguez
6. David Ortiz
7. Johan Santana
8. Carlos Beltran
9. Chase Utley
10. Miguel Cabrera
11. Lance Berkman
12. Carl Crawford
24. Roy Halladay
23. Derek Jeter
22. Carlos Lee
21. Matt Holliday
20. Hanley Ramirez
19. Jason Bay
18. Justin Mourneau
17. Mark Teixiera
16. Travis Hafner
15. Manny Ramirez
14. Vlad Guererro
13. David Wright
25. Grady Sizemore
26. Bobby Abreu
27. Chris Carpenter
28. Ichiro Suzuki
29. Carlos Zambrano
30. Aramis Ramirez
31. Miguel Tejada
32. Vernon Wells
33. Derrek Lee
34. Jake Peavy
35.Roy Oswalt
36. Jermaine Dye
The idea here is to get yourself a nice dose of Power, Stolen Bases and either a top flight Pitcher or and addition to your Power or Speed. The perfect example is Pick #5 with Arod, then Hanley, then a top flight Pitcher. You have Arod as your main power source, Hanley as the main speed source and Zambrano as an ace.  Or go with all hitting like #12 and get a starting pitcher or two next at picks 4 & 5 for balance!

Scenario #2

6. Alex Rodriguez
7. Carlos Beltran
8. Johan Santana
9. Carl Crawford
10. Chase Utley

12. David Wright
24. Roy Halladay
23. Derek Jeter
22. Matt Holliday
21. Travis Hafner
20. Hanley Ramirez
19. Carlos Lee
18. Manny Ramirez
17. Mark Teixiera
16. Justin Mourneau
15. Jason Bay
14. Vlad Guererro
13. Lance Berkman
25. Chris Carpenter
26. Grady Sizemore
27. Jermaine Dye
28. Ichiro Suzuki
29. Carlos Zambrano
30. Aramis Ramirez
31. Miguel Tejada
32. Vernon Wells
33. Roy Oswalt
34. Derrek Lee
35. Jake Peavy
36. Bobby Abreu
Do you start to see a pattern?  If you get Pujols, the best fantasy producer in the league, my suggestion is to follow that up with the best available Starting Pitcher to compliment Pujols and you will undoubtedly have a choice between Halladay, Oswalt, Carpenter, Peavy and Zambrano by the time pick #24 & #25 come back around. This works because you can still grab another top bat at #25 like Sizemore, Dye, Aram, Wells, for example.

Scenario #3

30. Aramis Ramirez
31. Ichiro Suzuki
32. Roy Oswalt
33. Derrek Lee
34. Matt Holliday
35. Jake Peavy
36. Bobby Abreu
Here, we start off in a different direction with Soriano as the first pick followed by a power bat at #24 and the a top flight pitcher with #25.  That's how you draft a balanced team!! That's almost a perfect combo of Power, Speed, and Pitching in the first 3 rounds! Some leagues will also see Howard and even Arod go first as some people are still loyal to Arod.

36. Derrek Lee
In this scenario, we see Santana go quite early as he will in some drafts, and rightfully so.  That person can come back later and potentially grab Holliday and Lee with their 2nd & 3rd picks.  If you are paying attention in your draft, you can really capitalize by drafting a balanced team or notching 3 top hitters and waiting on pitching like some people like to do.
